SCREENING
A quick screening can help parents to know if they should be concerned with their child’s development with communication and/or feeding/swallowing skills. Screenings are typically 20-30 minutes per child, using one to two short measures of the child’s skills. Measures can be informal and/or formal screening tools, such as professional observation, parent/teacher consultation, checklists, and standardized screening assessments. A screening outcome sheet with indication of recommendations for full evaluation, monitoring of child’s development, referral to other professional, and/or functioning within normal limits. For more information or to schedule a screening, please contact us. Screenings are a great way for daycares, preschools, and private schools to help parents identify children that may need intervention from a speech language pathologist.
INITIAL EVALUATION
Each child is evaluated based on their individual needs and areas of concern. An initial evaluation includes parent interview, play based observations, informal assessments, and formal assessments. The initial evaluation is a comprehensive snapshot of your child’s communication and/or feeding/swallowing strengths and areas of need. The initial evaluation will determine recommendations for the treatment plan, including, long-term and short-term goals, frequency of therapy, and home exercise plan. The report will be provided and reviewed with the parent before treatment begins.
RE-EVALUATION
A re-evaluation will be completed every six months to a year based on the patient’s progress towards their long-term and short-term goals. A re-evaluation assists in determining the continuation of therapy services, i.e., new long-term and short-term goals, increase or decrease in therapy services, or discharge from therapy services. Each re-evaluation will include progress towards the patient’s current long-term and short-term goals as well as formal and informal measures in the area of need. The report will be provided and reviewed with the parent after each re-evaluation.
